Robert Calleja

Director to The New Choral Singers since July 2004, Robert is by profession a teacher at Savio College in Dingli. He studied at the University of Malta and obtained a B.A. (Gen) Degree and a PGCE.

Robert is also an accomplished flutist, having attained the A.L.C.M. and L.L.C.M. Diplomas in flute performance from the London College of Music. He is a member of the Trio D’Argento, the official chamber group of the Malta Flute Society, and occasionally performs part-time with the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Malta.

In order to further enhance his directing skills, in 2005, Robert attended a series of master classes in choir direction in Heresford, UK under the tutelage of Robin Gritton and Keith Orell, both of whom are conductors to established choirs in Berlin and Halle respectively. Furthermore, Robert spent six years studying church organ with Fr. Albert Borg OSA (former Maestro di Cappella at St. John’s Co-Cathedral), with whom he also studied harmony and Gregorian chant.

Robert regularly performs as a flutist in various concerts, as a soloist, in chamber ensembles and in orchestras, both locally and abroad.
